With eco-friendly gift wrapping being on the rise each year, this handy guide will inspire you to wrap sustainably without compromising on quality, style or individuality.
The Christmas countdown is officially on! We’ve reached this wonderful time of year where half the population are sat smugly surrounded by their pre purchased gifts, while the rest of us muggles are still scurrying around the local shops trying to find that perfect present for our loved ones. Whichever side you fall into, the real fun is yet to begin... Christmas wrapping!
There’s always something so pleasing about presenting a beautifully wrapped gift – almost more satisfying than the present inside. After all, it’s the gift-wrapped presents sitting under the Christmas tree that we will impatiently stare at for weeks before the big day.
But how do we wrap presents while being mindful of the environment? Think of all the time you’ve spent trawling the internet and supporting your local shops to find the perfect eco-friendly gift. It would be a shame to let all that hard work go to waste by wrapping the perfect gift in any old nonsense. Especially if it will join the other 83m2 of wrapping paper in landfill. That’s 227,000 miles of wrapping paper currently being used in the UK each and every year!
So, what’s the solution?
Eco-friendly Wrapping Paper Alternatives
Collecting Old Gift Bags
Are you a gift bag hoarder like us? GREAT, it’s their time to shine and get reused. I must admit, this is a bit of a cheat option, but it’s quick, easy, no wrapping involved. It is also much better for the environment as by us not buying new, we are not encouraging further demand of the product! Yay, go us!
Reusable Fabric bags
Reusable bags that last a lifetime make for the perfect Christmas gift wrap. It may not be for everyone, especially if you have children as I'm sure you remember half the fun was tearing the wrapping off as fast as you can! But these days there are some gorgeous organic cotton bags available, which would still keep your gifts a surprise while creating no waste. Why not turn them into part of your Christmas tradition and see how many years you can use them for?
Recyclable wrapping paper
Recyclable wrapping paper should be the norm these days, but unfortunately that’s not the case. Wrapping paper that has been laminated, has foil or glitter can’t be recycled in many places and in turn ends up in landfill. At ALFA, we want to put a stop to this so we’ve created a 100% recyclable elegant and chic wrapping paper that will wow all of your gift receivers.
Paper tape is the way forward! This little gem is 100% recyclable unlike the plastic sellotape traditionally used. PLUS, it looks so much more aesthetically pleasing on your recyclable wrapping paper as it just blends right in! What’s not to love?
It’s those little extra’s that really makes a present stand out. We love to add gorgeous bows on our presents (even if it takes a few painful attempts to get it right!) But enough of these overpowering fancy glitter bows that can’t be recycled. We need a better option and twine is the answer. Bonus points if you can secure your presents shut using ONLY twine! Let us know if you succeed.
DIY tags from old Christmas cards
If you’re organised and kept your Christmas Cards from last year, get stuck in and make your own gift tags. Just simply cut up your old cards and you’re ready to go! Let’s not waste what we already have.
ALFA’s Personalised Gift Tags
For those short of time and looking for a sustainable alternative – don’t worry, we've got you. Our hand written gift tags are 100% recyclable and designed with love. And if you want to go the extra mile to show your loved ones just how much you care, we can add personalised calligraphy on each and every one.
With Royal Mail delivering around 150 million Christmas Cards and packets each year it’s more important than ever to go green with your Christmas cards. Similar to wrapping paper a lot of Christmas cards just won’t make the recycling cut with all of the glitter and accessories, and that’s not even considering the amount of cards that are still being wrapped pointless plastic. Before buying your Christmas cards this year, we suggest doing an eco-friendly check for the following:
- No plastic wrap or packaging – this is just a total waste
- No glitter embellishments (if you receive one that has glitter, cut the back off to recycle that part at least)
- Look for cards that have been printed on recycled card
Lucky for you, we have created a stunning selection of Christmas cards this year that meet all of your sustainable needs. Sumptuous, romantic and with a touch of opulence – our Winter Florals take on a darker tone with our 2019 Christmas card collection. All our cards have been printed on recycled card using eco-friendly inks. Discover the premium styles that don’t compromise our sustainability promise.

The dried orange slice makes for cute tree decorations, ornaments to put on your Christmas display shelf (we all have one, don’t we?)
